Helmets: A Must for Children and Adults Alike

Yet another child in our community is fighting for her life due to a tragic accident on a skateboard.  No, this is not an isolated incident, but the majority of accidents involving children and bicycles or skateboards are not publicized.

Please insist that your children  wear helmets anytime they are on a bike, skateboard, scooter, or roller blades.   This also applies when the kids are on your driveway or in front of your house.   Parents, this safety rule applies to you, too.  When you bike with your children and don’t wear a helmet you  are showing them it’s okay to not wear one.

Life-changing and sometimes fatal injuries can happen in the blink of an eye, and often can be prevented or drastically reduced if a helmet had been worn…

I am very insistent on my child wearing a helmet whenever he rides his bike to school, and he always is wearing it when he leaves for school, but he takes it off after I can’t see him anymore. I’ve tried to tell him the stories like this one, where children end up fighting for their lives after an accident that could have been prevented, but he doesn’t think it’s “cool” to wear one. What do you suggest I do to really get the point across that it is important to wear one, even if he doesn’t think it’s cool?

Consider taking away a privilege – or the bicycle – if he is ever seen by you or another adult riding without wearing his helmet. Another idea is to have him choose a new helmet, and maybe personalized it with stickers. If he likes his helmet he is more likely to wear it. Or don’t allow him to bicycle to school if he can’t be trusted to wear the helmet once he’s out of sight.
